When I install the brave browser (flatpak) from the software app on the FLX1s and start it I get a page full of error messages. Is there some known problem with the flatpak brave browser running on this device?
Yes it is a known issue for chrome based flatpaks.

We ship it with FF and have made several tweaks to it so it works well. Other browsers we cant say the same about. Brave is my personal favorite also but I only use FF on my FLX1S
It seems like their are multiple problems with it right now.
I tried installing it via cli like they tell you on their website but also with no success.

As said above, I did install Brave that way. I have been using web apps through Brave and Firefox the whole week or so I have had the device with no issues. If there is anything I can help with to hopefully get it working for you all just let me know I am more than happy to help.
Update:
1. Install curl
sudo apt install curl
2. Install brave via cli ( https://brave.com/linux/)
curl -fsS https://dl.brave.com/install.sh | sh
3. Open Brave in the terminal
brave-browser
4. Finish setup
5. Close brave
6. Go to the main menu and open brave via Icon
7. Go to Mobile Settings App (Do not close brave)
8. Go to Compositor and enable down scale for brave
